Weblog How Not WhySaturday, December 24, 2005
Lately I have been thinking a lot about the nature of science, especially now that the Kansas State Board of Education has adopted new science standards that include "intelligently designed" criticisms of evolution and a "more adequate" definition of science.
I decided to try to put my thoughts about the nature of science to music. The result of this effort is a new song called "How Not Why." I know that singing about science seems quite odd, but I think this may be an unoccupied niche that I can fill. Who knows? Maybe over time I'll write enough songs to put together an album. Living in Kansas is certainly giving me enough material.

I'm sorry to contact you this way but I have tried to mail you but the mail got rejected by (I assume) yur spam filter ... not sure why!
Essentially it was an invite to visit the "Science, Just Science" campaign site (http://www.justscience.org.uk) with a few additional details.
Hi Jeremy, it's Tim from the Science, Just Science site.
I've had a listen to both How, Not Why and Trust God, Teach Evolution, they are both good as well. Some feedback for you - if you don't mind? There's no doubt in my mind that you have some talent there - both for song writing and for singing. I'm impressed with all three of your songs. I'd rate Just Because We Don't Know as the best so far :) Mainly because I think sometimes you try to cram a few too many words into a line in the other two! Trust God, Teach Evolution is probably the weakest of the three for a couple of reasons - when your drum track kicks in it doesn't quite scan with the rest, and the ending is a bit rough. But is also probably has the most powerful single sequence you've done yet - the Trust God, Teach Evolution chorus with just the drum and voices is really good stuff. I hope this kind of feedback helps! And whatever you do, keep writing...
Thanks for the feedback, Tim.

You're right about there being too many words in some of the lines of my songs. When my wife first "How Not Why," she said it sounded like someone on speed! As you can imagine, it's hard to write about the nature of science and maintain lyrical simplicity, but I'm working on it! << Home Archives
