CBC Story on Kansas Controversy

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

I was recently interviewed by Neil MacDonald from the CBC for a rather lengthy story he was doing on the science standards controversy in Kansas. He came to my classroom and got some shots of my Zoology students dissecting earthworms. It was an interesting experience, to say the least.

MacDonald caught me somewhat off-guard with one of his questions. Of course, that was the clip they included in the story. Looking back, I'm satisfied with my answer. I just wish I would have stated it more clearly. He asked what I would do if my Principal told me that I had to teach "intelligent design" in my Biology classes. After suggesting that I might be looking for another job, I eventually got around to saying that I would have a problem because it would be ethically inappropriate.

Afterwards, I sort of wish I had simply said something like, "What is there to teach? There are no concrete scientific claims associated with intelligent design. There are no research results supporting the existence of an intelligent designer. You can't teach something that doesn't exist."

Anyway, the story is now available online. You must have Real Player installed to view it. Enjoy!
