Weblog The Problems With "Teaching the Problems"Saturday, April 23, 2005
There's a great essay by Michael Sprague over on the Philosophy of Biology blog:
The Teaching-the-Problems argument Here are my comments regarding this issue: There are many evolution critics in Kansas who sincerely believe there are serious problems with evolution. In reality, there appear to be "problems" only because the critics don't have a clear understanding of what evolutionary biologists actually claim. When evolution is clearly understood, the "problems" quickly disintegrate. When people actually understand evolution, they often have no problem accepting it as a viable scientific explanation. That's why a strong emphasis on evolution in high school Biology is so important. ID promoters thrive on a distorted caricature of evolution. By misleading others into thinking there are problems with evolution, they can play on the religious misgivings that some people have towards evolution. No wonder they want schools to "Teach the Problems." Otherwise, they would have no chance of further advancing their cause. Archives
