OK – That’s enough already!

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

It appears that the Oklahoma legislature is doubling down on its quest to make Kansas look good.

A second Oklahoma antievolution bill has been filed by State Representative Sally Kern, a well known opponent of REAL science. The bill is nearly identical to a bill that died in committee two years ago.

This makes the fourth antievolution bill of 2011. Despite the frigid temperatures outside, antievolution activity is heating up. Don’t worry – we’re keeping our eyes on the Kansas legislature. If a similar bill is filed here, we’ll be on it.

OHHHHHHHklahoma! Where the wind goes sweeping…

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

…through State Senator Josh Brecheen’s ears.

I realize that’s harsh, but how else does one explain his openly stated intent to have creationism presented in public school classrooms as a scientifically credible alternative to evolution? Apparently, he is unaware of the fact that teaching creationism clearly violates the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Well, Brecheen (pronounced BRAKEEN, as in “brakeen the law”) recently followed through on his promise to “teach the debate of creation vs. evolution” by introducing this year’s third anti-evolution bill. According to the NCSE, the bill combines two recently popular anti-evolution strategies – “Academic Freedom” and “Critical Analysis of Evolution.”

Unlike the wavin’ wheat, there’s nothing sweet-smelling about this bill.

“Standing up to the Experts”

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Here’s a worthy cause to support – a documentary about the steps taken by members of the Texas Board of Education to re-write the state’s Science and History standards.

The title of the documentary really says it all. In order to impose their personal beliefs on Texas school children, some members of the Board rejected or highly modified the work of the experts from their own Board-appointed writing committees.

Based on the preview shown below, former Board president Don McLeroy will be highly featured. I can’t help but wonder if there will be any coverage of the quote-mining fiasco.

Here we go again.

We’ve been here before. It seems that some legislators in Missouri and Kentucky just cannot resist the temptation to introduce unintelligently designed anti-evolution legislation. NCSE has the details, and I have updated the Track the Bills page accordingly.

I realize that it’s been nearly three months since I posted something new on this blog. The way I see it, this is a good thing. It means there hasn’t been a lot of anti-evolution activity lately, at least not anything that has showed up on my radar as significant.

May it be continue to be so.
